NYFW: Jonathan Simkhai

Sep 21, 2016

Ever since I bought my first Jonathan Simkhai piece, I have been following the designer for a while. I got the chance to see his FW 2016 show last season, so imagine my giddiness when Cristal from Beauty Goodies asked if I wanted to cover the SS 2017 show because she wasn't able to at the last minute. I literally ran home from the ShopStyle Social House event (or rather, waited 15 minutes for an Uber for a ride that lasted less than 10 minutes) to grab my camera and change out of heels (ugh, I should know better, living in NYC and not having an extra pair of flats or sandals!). I met up with Cristal backstage at the Arc, and immediately started to feel that exciting backstage rush, the organized chaos of final touches of makeup, models milling around, hairspray misting everywhere, and the music pumping. My favorite part of the runway shows is not necessarily the show itself, but the process of the entire production coming together. It brings a whole new level to "it takes a village." I loved seeing the rehearsal, and catching Jonathan Simkhai himself give last minute instructions to the models. Of course the clothes itself were evocative of his signature sweet spot  a parade of nude and (surprisingly, light blue) palettes, luxe shreds of silk, and an ethereal sexiness across the entire collection. Most of my shots are from my iPhone, because it was just easier to post to Instagram that way. Keep scrolling to see more behind-the-scenes, as well as my favorite looks.

Light and music test during rehearsal (she had to restart her walk several times for tech reasons)

My favorite part? Rehearsal. The video is long, but it's the full finale walk plus a formation that I don't get because they didn't do it during the real show, haha. Plus, there is a cameo by Jonathan himself.

The peeling of the plastic cover on the runway, so shhh it's starting
