NYFW: Rack Addik + Marina Micanovic

Sep 26, 2016

Fashion week (or rather, month) is a huge opportunity in the industry for emerging designers to showcase directional designs, gain exposure, and expand their brand awareness. I had the opportunity to attend two shows produced by AMCONYCRack Addik and Marina Micanovic. I'll be honest, I had not heard of either designers before I attended these shows, but I guess that's what they mean by "emerging", right? Nestled in a penthouse on the West side amidst the Hudson Yards construction was an unveiling of unique silhouettes that followed suit in catering to the consumer's desire to "see-now-buy-now." Each designer's collection was completely different from each other, and that's what I love about fashion and its versatility of expression. Keep reading for my POV on both shows!

Rack Addik
The name Kelly Dempsey might sound familiar, and that's because she was a former contestant on season 14 of "Project Runway", where she landed runner-up. Kelly is the founder and creative force behind Rack Addik, an interpretation of the girl looking for fashion forward and eclectic street-wear that goes against the norm. Every model clad in bright and bubble-gum design motifs, not afraid to blow kisses at the crowd, the Rack Addik girl is energetic, fun, and highly confident.

Marina Micanovic
The next day, I returned to Studio 450 to watch Marina Micanovic's take on modern and edgy contemporary womenswear. I absolutely loved her use of vibrant colors balanced out by neutral white and black. Models were sent down the runway featuring outfit trios, first in pink and white and evolving through the primary colors of black, yellow, and more white. My favorite color motif was black with accents of yellow – something unexpected yet is a refreshing burst of vibrancy that we can look forward to come springtime. Other details to notice – shredded tops and skirts that sashay with every move, as well as missing sleeves, meaning we can expect one-shoulder tops to replace the fatigue we may all be feeling with off-the-shoulder.
